Oral Sedation

A premier dental facility, MINT dentistry is proud to offer solutions to help quell your dental phobias and anxieties, so you can obtain the gorgeous smile you want with minimal discomfort. Our board-certified dental professionals may recommend oral-conscious sedation for cleanings and advanced procedures to make your visit more comfortable. Oral-conscious sedation involves taking a prescription anti-anxiety medication prior to your appointment. The medication will keep you awake and able to respond to instructions while still feeling incredibly relaxed and at ease. This sedation dentistry method varies by practice location. To learn more about oral sedation or to find out if you are a candidate, contact our skilled team of doctors to schedule your consultation.

In general, oral-conscious sedation can help both adults and children who have anxieties or fears about going to the dentist. Before you are prescribed a medication for oral-conscious sedation, our team will need to complete a thorough consultation to determine if you are a good candidate. We will go over your medical history, current medications, and other factors to ensure you can safely take an anti-anxiety medication and decide which type will be best for your needs. Oral sedation may not be a good option if you have heart or respiratory problems, are pregnant, or have had a reaction to benzodiazepines in the past.

I have really bad anxiety about going to the dentist to the point that even talking about it makes me break out in nervous sweat. I've had some traumatizing experiences at the dentist in the past even just getting simple fillings where the staff at those places just did not handle the situation well in my opinion. I gave Mint a try after reading good reviews and seeing they offered oral conscious sedation. I went for the consultation last week and met Dr. Kweik and the staff who were all extremely friendly and understanding. They didn't make me feel embarrassed about wanting the sedation even just for 3 little fillings. Today I went and got the fillings done and I was so anxious even the prescribed oral meds did not seem to be working so they put me on nitrous gas. It took about 2 hours for me to relax enough to proceed and the team was absolutely patient and caring the entire time. I never once felt rushed or pressured even when I knew I was taking far longer to calm down than most people. I really appreciate that Dr. Kweik and her team were so kind and patient with me. The 4 shots she gave me were completely painless and the actual fillings were done and over with so quickly. I definitely plan to go back in the future (and hopefully not be so nervous next time) and would recommend Dr. Kweik and the team at Mint Highland to anyone!

There are several types of oral-conscious sedation medications that can be used. The type recommended by MINT dentistry will depend on your level of anxiety, your physical health, what procedure is being performed, and the estimated length of your appointment. Your oral-conscious sedation medication will be prescribed during your consultation, so you can have it filled before your procedure. Since you will need to take it before arriving, you should arrange to have a responsible adult take you to your appointment. With light oral-conscious sedation, you will remain relaxed but still be awake and alert. With moderate sedation, you will also stay conscious, but your memory of what happened will start to get a bit spotty. You may fall into a light sleep but should wake up easily. Our dedicated team will go to great lengths to make sure you feel safe and cared for during your procedure. We offer Beats headphones and flat-screen televisions so that you can relax further while your procedure takes place.

Recovery from sedation will depend on what medication was prescribed. However, you will need to arrange for someone to take you home and stay with you for at least 2 – 4 hours while the medication wears off. A MINT dentistry team member or doctor will speak with you (during your consultation) about possible side effects from the specific medication prescribed for you. Most commonly, patients experience temporary headaches, dizziness, nausea, or vomiting after oral-conscious sedation. The risk of nausea and vomiting can be reduced by having a light meal before taking the medication and eating a small snack about one hour after your procedure. If you are concerned about symptoms after you have returned home, please don’t hesitate to contact our support staff for reassurance.
